Located in the same building as the State's archives, the California Museum provides an amazing collection of historical artifacts in one place. Many topics are brought alive with immersive exhibits. The museum also has a California Hall of Fame which highlights people who have "made a mark on history".
The museum has a variety field trips for classrooms. Standard field trip topics include the Missions, the 31st Star (statehood journey), California Trilogy (museum + IMAX + state capitol), and A Time for Remembrance (Japanese American Internment). Specialized programs on the same topics add on an additional level of activities. Field trip information is available here. Do know that there is a 30 student minimum. Many exhibits have supporting lesson plans and activity sheets.
The museum also has an extensive amount of resources for educators. The exhibit activities listed about can be used independently in the classroom. Their Artifact of the Month program is outstanding for classroom discussion. Research resources are also available for Missions, State History, Immigration Japanese American Internment, and Gold Rush. They also sell a Bear Flag Revolt kit for classrooms.

The museum is open Tuesdays to Saturdays 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sundays 12:00 to 4:00 pm. Admission is charged.
