Built during the Civil War, Fort Point was designed to protect the bay from any attacks. Although it never saw any battles, it stands proudly as an historical reminder of the role of the U.S. military in early California. Fort Point is open for field trips, docent guided, and self guided tours. There is a tour booklet at the fort and audio tour that can be downloaded ahead of time. There are also docent led demonstrations on cannon loading as well as crabbing. One of my favorite is the candlelight evening tour. They are held monthly in the winter and require advanced reservations. The historic barracks area also contains informative exhibits on non Civil War topics. Learn about the Golden Gate Bridge, the Buffalo Soldiers, and other military stories by wandering around the floors. The Fort Point web site also has an extensive digital photo gallery.
Fort Point has three different school field trips available; Sensible Habitats (K-1), Point of Inquiry (4th grade), and Behind the Bricks (4/5 grade). These field trips use artifacts, inquiry, and detective skills to create a learning experience. Check the links to learn when the application dates are. If you are unable to attend the field trips, there is still some valuable classroom resources (like videos) on the upper grade program pages.

Parking is easily available with restrooms right outside. There is also a nice grassy area for picnicking. |
