If you want to look for gold, Gold Bug Park and Mine is the place to go. The park, once the site of four active mines, provides a comprehensive understanding of how gold was found. Visitors can see the creek when gold was panned (and try for themselves at the troughs), put on a hard hat and go deep into a hard rock mine, see artifacts at Hattie's museum, watch a blacksmith at work, and see an original stamp mill in its original location.
Guided school field trips are available with details here. They book EARLY for the upcoming school year (Feb. 2016 for 2017 trips!). Otherwise, there is no admission for the park though fees are charged to tour the mine and gold pan. The park has plenty of space for parking, lunch (a covered pavilion), and running around with public restrooms available. There are also hiking trails.
