The Golden Gate Bridge is one the most iconic symbols of San Francisco. It is an amazing place to visit and learn about. There are numerous resources about the bridge's building and the stories surrounding it. I've listed some of my discoveries below.
Building the Golden Gate Bridge Video: Posted by the Prelinger Archives, the visuals from the towers and elevators during constructions are amazing. At about 3:30, the video starts with how the steel towers were built and transported across the United States.
The Golden Gate Bridge has it's own research site with photos, videos, curriculum, and fun facts. All of the bridge's construction data is listed here. PBS's American Experience created a series of curriculum resources about the Golden Gate Bridge. There are biographies, timelines, and technical information. The web site, although above most elementary levels, does have audio supports for some of its articles. The teacher's guide has discussion questions to support the film. |
The Golden Gate Bridge is open all year round for self guided visiting. There are season hours for pedestrians. (see above)
Parking is available on both sides (might have fees) and bicycle riding is permitted. Weekends and holidays can be extremely crowded. The walk across the bridge is 1.5 miles one way. There is a new interactive outdoor exhibit on the San Francisco side, which worth exploring. City Guides offers free guided tours regularly though school groups would have to be arranged ahead of time. |
