Located in the historic San Mateo County Courthouse, the San Mateo County Museum captures the role the peninsula has played in Bay Area history. Originally connecting the San Francisco mission to the San Jose pueblo, San Mateo County has evolved and changed dramatically over time. Divided into the different rooms of the courthouse, there are exhibits on the first people, the region's natural resources, and the transportation and settlement of all the different communities. The museum has outstanding artifacts and interactive activities for all ages. Visitors can send telegrams, ride a stagecoach and a surf board, and practice being in a courtroom to name a few.
The San Mateo County History Museum has a variety school field trips available, which tend to get filled quickly by San Mateo area schools. However, the museum also has four different traveling trunks or backpacks. The subjects are Ohlone, Immigrants, a Gold Miner's backpack, and Life in the 1900s. These trunks can be borrowed for a month (for a fee) and contain artifacts and curriculum targeted for 3rd and 4th graders.
